Forty miles of protected Atlantic beach and dune, running from Chatham up through Provincetown. Nauset Light and Coast Guard Beach are two of the better-known stops along it.
Provincetown
The artsy town at the very tip of the Cape, with a walkable Commercial Street, whale watching boats that depart daily in season, and one of the more distinct nightlife scenes in New England.

A quieter fishing village with a working pier where boats unload the catch most afternoons, a lighthouse over the elbow of the Cape, and gray seals often visible offshore.

A car makes it much easier to move between beach towns, since public transit is limited outside a few shuttle routes in summer. If you plan to stay in one town and mostly walk to the beach, you can get by without one.
Can I take a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket from Cape Cod?
Yes. Ferries to Nantucket run out of Hyannis year-round. The year-round ferry to Martha’s Vineyard departs from Woods Hole in Falmouth, with an additional seasonal high-speed ferry to Martha’s Vineyard from Hyannis in the summer months. Both islands work well as a day trip or an overnight add-on to a Cape stay.
When should I visit to avoid the worst crowds and traffic?
Late June and September offer warm weather and open beaches with noticeably lighter crowds and traffic than July and August. Weekday travel and avoiding the Friday and Sunday bridge rush also help year-round.
