Pennsylvania

Waterfalls, lakes and mountain resorts, about two hours from New York or Philadelphia.

About Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains roll across northeastern Pennsylvania in low, thickly forested ridges cut by the Delaware River and scattered with lakes that turn glassy at sunrise. Generations of East Coast families have used the Poconos as a mountain retreat, close enough for a weekend and wild enough to feel like a real escape. What you are booking here is a resort room as your home base.

Summer means lake swimming and tubing, along with outdoor waterparks at Camelbeach and the region's larger indoor-outdoor resorts. By early October the ridges turn deep red and gold above Bushkill Falls and the Delaware Water Gap, and by December the same slopes reopen as ski runs at Camelback. One base covers all three seasons.

What to do

Highlights of Pennsylvania

01

Bushkill Falls

Marketed since the early 1900s as the Niagara of Pennsylvania, Bushkill Falls links eight waterfalls by boardwalk and forest trail through a hemlock ravine, with the main falls dropping about 100 feet over layered shale.

02

Camelback Mountain and Camelbeach

Camelback Mountain runs ski and tubing slopes through the winter, then switches over to Camelbeach, one of the largest outdoor waterparks in the Northeast, for the summer season. Most Pocono resorts sit within a half hour.

03

Delaware Water Gap

The Delaware River cuts a mile-wide notch through the Kittatinny Ridge at the Delaware Water Gap, with river beaches, canoe launches and a climbing trail up Mount Tammany for a view back down the gorge.

04

Lake Wallenpaupack

Pennsylvania's second-largest lake at thirteen miles long, Lake Wallenpaupack is the region's boating and fishing hub, with lakeside marinas renting pontoon boats, jet skis and kayaks by the day.

05

Pocono Raceway

Pocono Raceway in Long Pond hosts NASCAR Cup Series race weekends on its distinctive triangular 2.5-mile track, drawing crowds from across the Northeast each summer.

Questions

Pennsylvania FAQs

How far is the drive from New York City or Philadelphia?

Mount Pocono is about two hours from New York City and roughly the same from Philadelphia, both around 100 miles by car. It is one of the closer mountain getaways for East Coast drivers, which is part of why it fills up on weekends.

Do I need a passport to visit the Poconos?

No. Pennsylvania is a domestic trip, so a valid government photo ID is all you need to fly, and nothing extra is required if you are driving in from another state.

When should I go to see the fall foliage?

Color usually peaks across the Pocono ridges in early to mid-October, though it varies a bit year to year with weather. Weekdays run noticeably quieter than weekends, when leaf-peeping traffic backs up on the main routes into Bushkill and Canadensis.

Is there anything to do if it rains?

Yes. Camelbeach and several of the larger resorts run indoor waterparks and arcades, and Bushkill Falls' boardwalk trails hold up fine in light rain since much of the walk is covered by tree canopy.

What does the Luxury Escape Offers package actually cover?

It covers your accommodations at the resort, plus applicable taxes and resort fees where noted. Meals are on you unless the property is marked all-inclusive. A specialist will confirm exact inclusions for your dates when you call.
