Wisconsin

Sandstone river bluffs, boat tours and waterparks, indoor and out, in central Wisconsin.

About Wisconsin

Wisconsin Dells sits where the Wisconsin River carved a narrow sandstone gorge through the middle of the state, leaving sheer bluffs, slot canyons and a small river town that has been a family vacation stop since the 1800s. What you are booking here is a resort room, often one built around its own indoor or outdoor waterpark.

The town earned its nickname, the Waterpark Capital of the World, from the concentration of resorts along Highway 12, led by Noah's Ark, one of the largest outdoor waterparks in the country, and indoor giants that run year-round regardless of weather. Boat tours still run the same gorge that made the Dells famous before any of it existed.

What to do

Highlights of Wisconsin

01

Noah's Ark Waterpark

Noah's Ark bills itself as America's largest outdoor waterpark, 70 acres of slides, wave pools and a lazy river along Wisconsin Dells' main strip. It anchors a stretch of Highway 12 lined with competing outdoor and indoor parks.

02

Dells Boat Tours

Boat tours run the Upper and Lower Dells, the narrow river gorge that gave the town its name, passing sandstone formations like Witches Gulch, a slot canyon walkway reached only by water.

03

Devil's Lake State Park

Wisconsin's most visited state park sits about fifteen miles south of the Dells, ringed by quartzite bluffs rising 500 feet above a spring-fed lake, with hiking, rock climbing and a swimming beach.

04

Indoor waterpark resorts

Resorts like Kalahari and Wilderness run enormous indoor waterparks alongside their outdoor ones, which keeps the Dells a workable year-round trip even when it is well below freezing outside.

05

Wisconsin River kayaking

Outfitters run kayak and canoe trips through the same sandstone canyon the boat tours cover, a quieter way to see the narrow passages and overhanging rock up close at your own pace.

Questions

Wisconsin FAQs

How far is Wisconsin Dells from Chicago or Milwaukee?

It is about three hours from Chicago, roughly 180 miles, and closer to two hours from Milwaukee, about 120 miles. Both are common weekend-trip distances, which is part of why the Dells gets so busy on summer Saturdays.

Are the waterparks open all year?

The big outdoor parks like Noah's Ark run Memorial Day through Labor Day. Several resorts, including Kalahari and Wilderness, also operate large indoor waterparks that stay open through the winter regardless of the weather outside.

Is Wisconsin Dells a good fit for young kids?

Yes. Most resorts are built around families, with shallow kid zones inside the waterparks, arcades and lazy rivers, plus the boat tours and Devil's Lake nearby for an easy day outside the resort.

Do I need a passport to visit?

No. Wisconsin is a domestic trip, so a government photo ID covers flying in, and nothing extra is needed if you are driving from a neighboring state.

What does the Luxury Escape Offers package actually cover?

It covers your resort accommodations, plus applicable taxes and resort fees where noted. Meals and waterpark admission are typically separate unless stated otherwise. A specialist will confirm exact inclusions for your dates when you call.
